Baby starling update

Journal Entry: Sat May 17, 2008, 3:56 AM

Journal

The new arrival slept through the night, then woke me up around 5 a.m. or so for a feeding. We've fallen into a comfortable routine - I keep him near me, so as to protect him from Hootie, and he rests quietly most of the time, but then will let me know when it's time for him to eat, rather than my trying to force food on him. I got some baby bird formula at the pet store, which is the easiest thing on earth to mix up, and he really likes it. He sucks down one or two eyedroppersful of the stuff and then settles back down again. I am encouraged. :)

The bird would be indebted to you. =D Have you asked anyone if it's alright to release the bird? The little birdie hasn't had any survival training from a mother... :(
I wouldn't know who to ask. I don't claim to know what I'm doing. I just couldn't let the little guy get smushed by a car... the grand extent of my plan is to continue feeding it until it can fly and then let it go at a big ol' park near me. The rest is out of my hands. I don't know what else I can do.

I am clueless. Four weeks? Five? Less? I am not going to have a problem letting him go, because having him in my apartment with my cats - Hootie especially - is stressful. I can't take my eyes off him for a second! So, when he's good to fly, I will release him and hope he knows or can figure out what to do with himself...

That is excellent - it wonderful that he lets you know what he needs, so that you don't have to constantly worry and fumble around with what to do to keep him comfortable and fed, etc.
